There are so many different options for student response systems today. Some are paid and some are free. We are going to look at two of these free options in this session.
Socrative
The first application we are focussing on is Socrative.
In each case it is free, beta is in development and they are using it to test out new features.
We will be working with the beta version today.
Here are some of the functions.
Quiz Types
There are 4 types of questions you can ask. You must have a prepared quiz ready for Quizzes and Space Races. Quick Questions can be made up on the go and the Exit Ticket has its own questions already assigned to it.
Each teacher has his/her own room number that number is always displayed and will never change.
Once you have some quizzes created you can then select the one you want to use from the list.
This step is necessary for running a quiz or a space race as seen below.
There are different options as you can see below for quizzes. You can control the pace, students can control the pace, you can enable names and randomise question and answer orders (recommended).
This is what the teacher sees on their screen while the test is running. No students have joined the room in this instance. As they join the names will accumulate in the first column.
These are the three options available for creating a quiz.
With a quick question the teacher asks the question and instructs the students to choose a letter that corresponds to either true or false, or number in the case of multiple choice, or write their answer in short answer form.
With Socrative you can create a quiz and import a quiz. Quizzes created in Socrative can also contain images.
Sharing Quizzes
Quizzes can also be shared with colleagues using the SOC # as illustrated below.
Reports
Socrative generates reports on the spot. These can be emailed immediately after the quiz is closed or after the fact by clicking on the reports option.
Now let's take a quiz!
Use i-nigma on the iPad you have been given to capture this QR code.
Here is the room number you will need to log in.
Please make sure you select student and include your name. It will prompt you to do this.
Let's Space Race!
Now that you know the answers, let's try a Space Race with the same quiz!
If you have left the room you will need to scan the QR code and enter the information again. If not you will only need to wait for the teacher to start the race.
Answer Garden
Answer Garden is another free app that you can use for easy collection of student responses. One of the differences between Answer Garden and Socrative is that Answer Garden doesn't collect student names. It is a great app for Brainstorming and you can even moderate student answers as they come in to filter out content you don't want displayed.
There is no login required, just click
and begin!

Follow the instructions on the screen.
Here are the explanations for each mode.
