Digital videos can be used in powerful ways by teachers. They can be used to demonstrate a point, or skills, provide tutorial practice and support, enhance a discussion or create a discussion point.
Our purpose in these two sessions is to review some digital videos that were created for the purposes above, learn to use basic video creation tools, and create videos that can be used in powerful ways by teachers. These sessions will be followed up by 3 further sessions in May. Please see the calendar on the front page for more details.

JING

For the first part of the session we will be using Jing. Jing is free application that is easily downloaded to both Macs and PCs. It is a great little tool that allows you to take custom screen shots and annotate them, as well as record your desktop. This is great for tutorial work.

Jing videos can be downloaded as swf files to a computer or uploaded to the screencast.com site and viewed online. The files are quite large so uploading them from your computer to a wiki or blog can be a problem. Linking to them on screencast.com is a good way around this problem.

A yearly subscription to JIng can be purchased online at this site for $14.95 a year. The pro version allows compact files, webcam integration, uploads to YouTube, and mpeg4 exports. These videos are editable.

Screencast-o-matic

This is a great application that allows up to 15 minutes of screen casting with a free account. All free account screencasts contain the Screencast-o-matic logo, but this can be disabled by signing up for a Pro Account for $9.99 a year. Pro accounts allow for videos up to one hour long in length. Video quality is high in the case of both free and paid for accounts.Videos created using screencast-o-matic can be uploaded directly to YouTube or downloaded to a computer. it is a quick, easy tool for working with screen casts.
